Laramie- Territorial Prison

Friday, 16 may,2014

Laramie is only 47 miles from Cheyenne so we drove over there. It's the county seat for Albany County.  Laramie began as a tent city along the Union-Pacific Railroad around 1860. It is at the 7000 ft level and has a population of around 34,000. Home to the  University of Wyoming it now has the Wyoming Technical institute. It is also the city where a homosexual  was tied to a fence post, brutally beaten and left to die.

The only place of interest seemed to be the famed Wyoming Territorial Prison. It's most notable inmate was Butch Cassidy. Remember the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"?. I think Paul Newman played his part.  Anyway, it was the only prison that ever kept him full time. When he got out, he turned to a life of more and more crime. Most of the other interests was consumed by the college students and a lot toward open air sports, i.e. skiing, hiking, rock climbing, etc. At lunch we asked a college girl working part time as a waitress what was there to do around the city. She said "drink".

One of the current features was the broom making shop. Looks like it is still in operation today for charity fund raising

After lunch we drove around town and saw these buildings that the artists were painting

Interstates  as a rule doesn't give you  as good a view as the original road but we took it anyway. On the way back we took the old route which did turn out to be much more scenic. At the rest stop  there was a monument of Abraham Lincoln and we saw a lot of antelope and interesting rock formations.  The photo above is of a tree that was saved by the road crews as it was the only one growing on top of the mountain leading into Laramie.
