2015-08-02 Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Highlands National Park

2015-08-02 Nova Scotia  and Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

After a mostly sleepless night in the general seating area of the ferry across from Port aux Basques we disembarked around 7:00 AM.and drove straight through to Baddeck, NS and had breakfast at the Village Lobster House. Afterwards, we turned North on Cabot Trail. We were going to drive completely around the entire peninsula, and we did.

BIG MISTAKE. We should have left the motor home at a parking lot somewhere and drove the truck. Anyway, off we go north. Driving distance will be around 100 miles or so. Seemed like the farther we went the worse the roads became and to the point we had to drop down to 30MPH
at times because of pot holes and incorrectly patched pot  holes, narrow roads, S curve roads, up snaky mountain roads and back down snakey roads. Some of the mountain roads were so steep I didn't think we would reach the top. THEN, coming down I had to keep the transmission in 2nd gear and use the engine brakes that would drop in down into first. CREEPY!. What an experience. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't ever do it again. We only saw one other large motor home, one semi tractor and one tour bus.

When we stopped at the visitors center and gateway to the park, we met a couple, Polly and walt  Jamison from Newtown, PA. They have a son who lived in Quakertown for many a year and probably knows Don and Millie. They may look them up. It was great sharing Rah, rah's with them and brag on each others almamater

Absolute some of the most beautiful and breath taking scenery a person could ever want to see. Mountains that flowed down into the sea, rocky shore lines and homes built for a king. Pull offs to take in birds but n whales and NO MOOSE. All the Moose are black and yellow and mounted on a road sign.It doesn't say they are crossing, so no need to wait for them.

As we drove through Cheticamp we got  caught up in a parade. Apparently they were celebrating something. Passing by the Catholic Church, a crowd was standing near a huge tent singing Psalms. No place to pull over and park, so we just passed it by.

Finally the trip  around the peninsula was over and we found a "Good Sam" RV Park for the night and maybe tomorrow as well.
