2015-07-07 Amelia Earheart & Harbour Grace

2015-07-08 Amelia Earhart & Harbour Grace

After we left Carbonear we headed to Harbour Grace ( used to be Havare de Grace when the French named it)where the statue and museum for Amelia Earhart is located.  We stopped at a shipwreck in the bay. It was an old rusting  ship that plied the coast with passengers. . The S.S. Kyle saw duty as a ferry between North Sydney and Port aux Basque, was strengthened for ice and was used as an icebreaker. It was a sealing vessel for several years. It broke loose during aa storm and became embedded in the rocky bottom where she sits today. Harbour grace is also known for Amelia Earhart. She had a home here and this is where she left for her attempt  to circumnavigate  the globe in her "Lockheed Vega". She  landed in Londonderry 14 hours and 54 minutes later and became the first woman to solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Her fatebecame known world wide and just recently investigators believe they havefound parts of her aircraft in the Pacific.

Located at the site of the S.S. Kyle is a DC-3, "The Spirit of Harbor Grace". It was manufactured by Douglas Aircraft company in Santa Monica. It was used during the WWII and later by Quebec Air and flew to Goose Bay and Quebec. It was later purchased by a Pike  family and donated to the city in 1993 in recognition for the city's part in developing aviation internationally.

Once beautiful

Conception Bay Museum

Just an old beautiful house built in 1780 and remodeled.

We visited the museum where Amelia's artifacts were kept along with other aviators  who flew through the region. It was built in 1870 on the site where  Peter Easton ( a famous pirate)had his fort built  and Goodman family artifacts and furnishings.  Haley Yetman and Regan Reynolds were the two tour guides that explained all the different artifacts. Thank you ladies for such a wonderful service.

The airfield runway built by the locals by hand using shovels and rakes. 4,000 ft long, 200 ft wide with a 4% rise at one end.

Across the street was an ancient Catholic Church that must have been gorgeous inside. Unfortunately, we couldn't go inside. It was erected in 1443 by the Knights of Columbus.
