Today was Anchorage Zoo day. We spent most of the day there just wandering around, enjoying the animals, enjoying a cup of coffee and just appreciating the beautiful day the good LORD gave us. You know, when you get back to nature with the wondrous creatures around us it becomes easy to believe that there is a greater power up above (or somewhere) that created them and us. Think of all the different species of any one of them, just like the numerous species of us, i.e. Caucasian, Latino, Asian, African, Jewish, etc. How many types of Camels are there, or monkeys, etc. They for sure weren't man made.
I was amazed at how many species of animals that were not in the zoo. You would normally expect monkeys, snakes (serpentarium)( there are no snakes in Alaska and they have laws to prevent bringing them in.). Everything we saw was a cold weather creatures, (except migratory birds) those that could survive forty below zero (-40 F). So we'll just post pictures today. Hope you enjoy them as well as the simply gorgeous flowers that are everywhere.
Hi everybody.
A small boy pointed at me and said to his dad "Look papa, he's wearing his Ipendence " Reminded me of someone else's "kaspetti" many years ago. Had a good chuckle. Love ya, Jaynee.
Happy Independence day everyone-Keep the Faith
We missed seeing, except at a too far distance: Polar Bears, saw one sleeping in a cave and came back later to find both hiding in their caves. Moose was laying in tall, tall grass with his head up and we came back later and couldn't find him at all, hiding in that tall, tall grass. Coyote, middle of the day, hot, sleeping somewhere, we couldn't find him.
River Otter, they put on a show, in and out of the water.
Harbor Seal
Musk Ox
Amur Tiger
Yak--shedding
Black Bear, people feeding him grass.
Bald Eagle
Dandy "lions", they're 2 ft tall and taking over Alaska.
This is in ditches all over the south, Queen Anne's Lace, but it's up to 7 ft tall in some places in Alaska.
Grizzly Bear, they walk on their back feet, heel to toe, like people.
Grizzlies
Look at those claws
Bear Scat
Snow Leopard
Wolves, two of six pups found after the Alpha Male and Female had been killed. The adults teach the young how to survive and without the teachers, these wouldn't have made it in the wild. Three males and three females will live out their lives in the zoo.
Red Tail hawk
Abandoned Wolf Pups in the nursery.
Arctic Fox, white coat for winter-sheds turning to brown for summer
Female Dall Sheep
Male Dall Sheep
Dall sheep minus a horn
Snow Hawk
Trumpeter Swans and three Cygnets
Caribou
Bee comb
Worker, Queen and Drone Bees
Bactrain (long hair) Camel
The 3 paintings below, were created by an elephant. We saw the sign on a fence at an empty field. No explanation of what happened to him, but in the museum there were films of him painting.
Tree Burl, these are cut off the tree and made into bowls or sculpted into artwork. Some are very beautiful and very expensive.
We finished off the day by going into the city, did some shopping and bought some gifts. If you don't get one within a week, you'll know it wasn't for you. LOL!
Then we went back to the Brewhouse Restaurant for pizza. It was so good, reindeer sausage with Blue Cheese and a few trimmings, no tomato sauce, had very thin crust and it was baked in a wood fired oven.. It was delicious. The waiter, Jeff, gave us a free World Famous Bread Pudding for our upcoming first anniversary. Service was the best you could ask for. Just love that place.
While we were waiting for our table to be cleared, (the other people were just leaving,) I sat down by a young (39) gal and talked to them. They had just come back from Fairbanks where her daughter had won some (14) ribbons in an equestrian contest. She was waiting for her pudding to arrive, so when it did I had her convinced I was going to join them in eating it. We had a good laugh. She's guilty of telling our server that we were celebrating our 1st anniversary!
